AP PHYSICS 1 (5.0 grade weight)
Grades 11, 12 ; 1 year – 1 Credit
Prerequisites: Concurrent enrollment in, or successful completion of, Algebra II and a minimum grade of “B” in two semesters of Chemistry and/or instructor approval.
This two semester course is designed for a 4-year college bound student who is planning a career in any science related field, including medicine, engineering, and technology. This course replaces Honors Physics and will follow the AP Physics 1 curriculum. The AP test given in May is strongly encouraged. Many colleges will give college credit for a score of 3 or better.
AP Physics 1 is an in-depth study of Newtonian Mechanics. Students will improve their analytic and problem solving skills and will be provided with the opportunity to use and apply mathematics to model real world situations. While no previous physics knowledge is needed for this class, a strong work ethic and a high degree of initiative, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently are required to do well in AP Physics 1. This course will challenge and enlighten those students who wish to prepare themselves for the challenge of a college level science curriculum.
